Hi there! I'm a newer follower of your blog and I just love it- so peaceful and grounding! I have a question for you: I have a hard time keeping my pelvis tucked under (during and not during yoga)- do you have any tips or tricks that might help me with that?
Thanks so much!

Hi notrevieenrose,

Thank you for patiently waiting for a response from me.

This is a common issue you are experiencing.

I can remember back when I was in ballet, my instructor would come around and swat our bums to make sure we kept our tailbones tucked in, chest lifted, spine straight. She did this throughout the class  - we didn’t learn fast!!

Keeping your tailbone tucked in (I say it this way because I find it easier for people to visualize than saying keep your pelvis tucked in) is an important part of a variety of different yoga and pilates poses, and a huge part of maintaining a confident, proper posture.

I can offer you a few suggestions to help:

1. Each time you stand in an upright position (in yoga or not) do a mental checklist of your posture. Start from the bottom, and work your way up :

  • Tailbone in
  • Core muscles engaged
  • Chest lifted
  • Spine straight
  • Shoulders up, back, and down.
  • Crown of the head presses towards the ceiling.

2. Strengthening your core muscles will also help you keep your tuck. Taking a pilates, yogalates, or even a ballet class would be right up your alley, as they tackle the core muscles otherwise neglected by crunches and situps.
3. Practice practice practice! Every time you go under a door, tuck. Every time you stand up from a seated position, tuck. Keep repeating the action and you will soon find your body is more comfortable this way, and not so comfy as slouching or swayed.
Thank you so much for your message, it reminds me to keep tucking too!
Love & Light
Natasha
